Comparative law studies the differences and similarities between the existing laws of different nations. Specifically, comparative law studies the various legal systems in existence including civil law, common law, Jewish law, Hindu law, Islamic law, Chinese law and socialist law. This field of study also includes describing and analyzing legal systems of other nations. Comparative law has become critical in international trades and multinational investments when analysis of foreign legal systems is required.

 

Over the last few decades, the importance of comparative law has grown steadily as a result of complex situations in existence such as democratization and global trades. He has participated in the constitutional building process of many nations including Nepal, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Tunisia, South Africa, Libya, Egypt, and Jordan. Sujit has lectured over 20 countries on constitutional issues. Choudhry is the founder of Center For Constitutional Transition, the first university-based organization that educates and supports various nations in constitutional building processes.

 

Professor  Sujit Choudhry has done extensive research on several issues concerning comparative law. The major points of his research have been developing legal designs that can manage the transition from violent political era to democratic politics. Additionally, he has studied widely in constitutional models for divided communities, fundamental questions in the study of comparative law, constitutional courts bill of rights and minority groups’ rights.
